🏕 How fast campsite cancellations disappear
A sold-out campground is not actually sold out. Plans change, and sites come back — constantly, in far greater numbers than most people expect.
The problem is not scarcity. It is speed.
Since 13 July 2026 our scouts have checked 55 campgrounds roughly every 15 minutes. Through 8 August they caught 783 sites reopening. We also watch restaurants on the same cadence, and the contrast turned out to be the most striking thing in the data: campsites disappear about four and a half times faster than restaurant tables do.
Half are gone in 45 minutes
For 501 of those 783 openings we saw both the appearance and the disappearance. The median gap was 45 minutes.

Nearly a third were gone before we looked again. Three quarters were gone inside two hours.
Compare that to the same measurement on hard-to-book restaurants, where the median is 3 hours 28 minutes and only 40% are gone within two hours. A returned dinner table will often sit there most of the day. A returned campsite is a race measured in minutes.
The practical consequence is blunt: manual checking does not work for campgrounds. Checking once in the morning and once at night gives you two chances at a thing that has a 45-minute median lifespan. You will watch a campground for a week, see nothing, and conclude nothing came back — while dozens of sites came and went between your checks.
The 5pm drop
Bucketing every opening into the campground's own local time, one hour dominates: 150 of 783 openings — 19% — appeared during the 5 o'clock hour.
The second peak is 8am, with 101.
Those two hours together account for nearly a third of everything we caught. The shape is a human one rather than a systemic one: sites coming back at the end of the working day, and again first thing in the morning. It is what a wave of people rethinking their plans looks like, aggregated.
If you are refreshing manually and can only do it twice a day, those are the two times.
Saturday is the contested night
Counting the nights that reopened:

Saturday leads by a wide margin, which is the opposite of what we found for restaurants — there, weekday evenings dominated and the weekend sat mid-pack. Camping demand is a weekend phenomenon in a way that dining is not, and the churn follows the demand.
More openings on Saturday does not make Saturday easy. It means Saturday is where both the volume and the competition are.
Cancellations land about five days out
The median gap between a site reopening and the night itself was 5 days. A quarter were for a night within 24 hours.
For restaurants the equivalent figure was 11 days. Campsite cancellations arrive later and closer to the date, which fits the behaviour — people abandon a weekend trip a few days out when the forecast turns, not a month ahead.
It also means the received wisdom is doubly wrong. The advice is to book the instant a rolling window opens, six months ahead. That is how you get the original inventory. It says nothing about the much larger secondary flow, which lands inside the week and disappears in under an hour.
What we cannot tell you
Our cadence is about 15 minutes, so anything that appeared and vanished inside one interval never existed as far as we are concerned. Every number here is a floor. The single most important statistic in this post — 29% gone within 15 minutes — is really "gone before we looked again." The true figure is higher and faster, and our instrument cannot see it. Tightening the cadence would raise that number, not lower it.
Six of the campgrounds we watch logged nothing at all in this window. Either nothing came back, or we are not reading their availability correctly. We would rather name that than quietly shrink the denominator.
The counts here also come from the change log we can currently retrieve, which does not reach back to the day watching began, so the totals are conservative.
